What is Odd: A Look at the Unusual, Unconventional, and Just Plain Weird

If you think about what it means to be “odd”, it can mean a whole host of things. It could simply mean something that’s out of the ordinary, something eccentric, something counter-cultural, or something just plain weird. All of this applies when it comes to oddity and how it can manifest in different ways. We’re taking a look at some of the ways the strange and unexpected can appear in everyday life.

The Unconventional

The unusual can definitely be a breath of fresh air when it comes to everyday life. After all, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. It could be through something as simple as wearing clothes you wouldn’t usually pick out, to breaking away from convention and doing something you’d never thought of before. The idea is to embrace the unpredictability that comes with the weird and unique, and to take advantage of how it can often make you feel liberated and inspired.

The Eccentric

“Eccentric” is a word that often gets used to describe something out of the ordinary. Whether it’s through people, places, or things, eccentricity often brings with it a sense of flair and panache. From the way someone carries themselves, to the stunningly eclectic design of certain buildings or objects, it can often be the most peculiar things that have the biggest impact. So it’s time to look at the wild, wacky, and wonderful things that make us go “wow” and to just “go with it”.

The Plain Weird

Sometimes it’s the simple things that can really stand out as odd. It could be something as straightforward (yet still barmy) as a neighbor walking their hedgehog on a leash or a man in a vintage diving suit modifying his truck. It could even be the absolute abnormality of having a hotdog shaped like a loaf of bread. The strange and the unexpected can take many forms, but when you look at them, you can’t help but be intrigued or amused. You can even add a bit of weird to your own life and go on a wild ride of curiosity and delight.

At the end of the day, being odd doesn’t necessarily mean being inappropriate or unacceptable; it just means being different and truly expressing yourself. So, take a look around and enjoy the unusual, unconventional, and just plain weird.
