What is Environmental Science?

Environmental science is the study of how human activities and natural processes interact with each other and the environment as a whole. The field of environmental science is composed of a variety of interdisciplinary topics such as ecology, economics, science, engineering, public health, policy and law. Environmental scientists are concerned with the protection of natural resources, the evaluation of human activities on ecosystems, the management of resources and the usage of natural resources.

Environmental Science and Environmentalism

Environmental Science is often associated with the term ‘environmentalism’. The term has been used to refer to both a philosophy which places a high value on protecting the environment and a social movement based on this philosophy. Environmentalism seeks to protect the natural environment from human activities and to promote sustainable development which conserves and respectful of the environment. Environmentalists are concerned with researching & understanding the activities that are damaging the environment and then coming up with solutions to the problems.

Applications of Environmental Science

Environmental science has applications in a variety of fields, from wildlife and fisheries management to public policy. Environmental scientists use their knowledge and skills to analyze data, interpret results and develop recommendations for improving human and environmental health. Environmental research often plays an important role in major decisions concerning air and water quality standards and establishing limitations on land-development activities. Environmental scientists also work towards providing better access to natural resources, promoting sustainable energy development and conserving biodiversity.

Environmental science plays an important role in helping to develop sustainable solutions to current and future environmental problems. Through increasing our understanding of the complex interactions between the environment and human activities, environmental scientists are able to provide valuable insight into how to better manage natural resources and mitigate the impacts of human activities on the environment.
