Space Movie Released In 1992: “Alien³”
Introduction
Released in theaters in May of 1992, “Alien³” was the third installment of the popular “Alien” franchise. Directed by acclaimed English director, David Fincher, this science fiction horror film was met with both critical and commercial success, grossing over $159 million worldwide and receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects in 1993.
Plot Summary
“Alien³” follows the exploits of the survivors of the previous “Alien” movies, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Newt (Carrie Henn). Both had previously been rescued from a space colony, in which the Xenomorphs had killed the entire population. Following another clash with the alien species, Ripley’s escape pod crashes on planet Fiorina 161, an all-male correctional facility where inmates are incarcerated for murder. As the inmates of Fiorina 161 begin to explore the escape pod, the alien species follow, attacking and killing many of the men. With the alien threat seemingly unstoppable, Ripley must face the Xenomorphs and their queen, ultimately choosing to self-destruct the entire prison to save mankind from the alien species.
Production
“Alien³” was filmed almost entirely on sound stages at England’s Pinewood Studios. Unlike the first two “Alien” films, Fincher set out to create a “gritty” look, which was achieved through the use of heavy production design and cinematography. Through the use of elaborate sets and special effects, iconic moments such as the “dragon” and the Queen battle in the foundry were created. Additionally, special attention was paid to the Xenomorphs, with both practical and CGI effects being used to create a more realistic look.
Conclusion
“Alien³” has stood the test of time as one of the most important science fiction horror films of all time. Praised for both its visuals and its story, this film is a benchmark of the “Alien” franchise and introduced a whole new generation to the mythology of the franchise. While it’s location shoot was limited to Pinewood Studios in England, it still managed to craft a world for viewers to escape into and witness the fierce battle between mankind and the Xenomorphs. With its success, it opened the door for future installments, including the recently released “Alien: Covenant.
