What is a Quadrilateral?

A quadrilateral is a four-sided shape that is composed of four straight sides and four angles. Because these shapes have four sides, they are often referred to as “four-sided figures.”

Types of Quadrilaterals

Squares and rectangles are both quadrilaterals that have four right angles, meaning that the angles are all equal to 90 degrees. A trapezoid is a type of quadrilateral that has only two sides that are parallel, while a kite is a type of quadrilateral that has two pairs of adjacent sides that are of equal length and two pairs of opposite angles that are equal in measure.

Properties of Quadrilaterals

The properties of a quadrilateral are defined by the angles and sides that compose it. For a quadrilateral to be considered a simple quadrilateral, all four interior angles must add up to 360 degrees. The sum of the measures of the four exterior angles surrounding a quadrilateral is also equal to 360 degrees.

The sum of the lengths of any two opposite sides of a quadrilateral is always equal, regardless of the shape of the quadrilateral. This is also true for any two adjacent sides; the sum of their lengths is always equal. Moreover, two opposite angles of any quadrilateral are always supplementary, meaning that their measures add up to 180 degrees.
