So I’m a Spider, So What?

We’ve all had moments when our lives have taken a decidedly unexpected turn. Maybe you thought you had a great job only to find yourself laid off. Maybe you thought you had a great relationship only to find yourself single. Maybe you thought you had a great future only to find yourself not in the perfect human form you expected.

We all have our moments, and for some, this moment is “So I’m a spider, so what?”

What It Means to Be a Spider

Believe it or not, this is a very common occurrence and one that can affect even the most unlikely of people. For example, take the character known only as “I” in the series So I’m a Spider, So What?. When we first meet “I” they’re an ordinary high school student living an ordinary life in an ordinary world. That all changes when they’re suddenly killed and reborn as – you guessed it – a spider!

It’s a strange and startling transformation that has much more than physical ramifications. You see, a spider’s life is a far cry from that of a human. They must use their web-spinning and trapping skills to survive the harsh environment of their new home, which is a strange fantasy world full of monsters and magic. Suddenly “I” must learn how to hunt, how to build webs, and how to make alliances with other creatures if they are to survive.

Learning to Adapt

While learning how to adapt to their new life and home, “I” also has to come to terms with the mind-numbingly difficult process of reinventing yourself. Without the aid of family or friends, they must find something that sets them apart and makes them special.

So how do you start to come to terms with this dramatic change? Well for “I” and for many others in this position, the focus is on learning to accept and embrace the new form and the new life that has come with it.

Acceptance is the Key

This new life may come with physical changes and even a whole new set of skills but it is ultimately about coming to terms with who you are and what this new life can offer. It can be a long and difficult road but the end result can be someone who is stronger and more confident in their newfound identity and abilities.

For “I”, the story ends with them coming to terms with their new identity and becoming comfortable in their new form, working towards becoming a respected “incarnate” in their fantasy world. They’ve embraced the fact that “I” is a spider, and so what? That doesn’t mean they can’t live a successful and fulfilling life.

Final Thoughts

We may never know what might happen should we be reborn in the form of an eight-legged creature, however, the lessons to be learned from So I’m a Spider, So What? are ones that will stay with us no matter the form we take.

No matter how difficult life may become, confronting and accepting change is always the first essential step towards accepting who we are and embracing the unique skills and opportunities that come with it. We don’t all have to be spiders, but if we are, it’s in our best interest to accept and embrace our new form.
