Two Feet but Can’t Walk: The World of Ducks

Swimming

Ducks are perhaps best known for their charimatic swimming abilities, and have been celebrated in literature, art, and science for centuries. Swimming is the primary method of locomotion for most waterfowl, and ducks excel at it. They use their webbed feet and strong wings to power through the water, propelling themselves forward and allowing them to travel great distances without rest. Even ducklings, which are hatched with just two tiny, undeveloped legs, can swim almost immediately after hatching.

Flight

In addition to swimming, ducks also fly. Ducks are able to take flight with their two feet and powerful wings and can easily cover a large area in a short amount of time. However, ducks are not able to walk, as their feet are not adapted for land. To take flight, ducks must take off from water, as their feet are not powerful enough to launch them from land.

Adaptive Feathers

Ducks have adapted their feathers to perform dual functions in water and air – they provide insulation while swimming, help the duck move quickly through the water, and create lift while in flight. Feathers also repel water, allowing ducks to stay warm and dry when they take to the air. Without their special, adapted feathers, ducks would not be able to fly or even stay afloat.

Ducks are incredibly resourceful animals, and have adapted their bodies in unique ways to live in and around water. They are able to travel great distances and explore new places with their two feet and powerful wings, as long as they never touch the ground!
