What do Bunnies Eat?

Bunnies make excellent pets; they are interactive, cuddly, and relatively low-maintenance. But like all pets, bunnies require regular health checkups and a balanced diet for optimal health. Knowing what to feed your pet bunny can be a daunting task, but understanding their natural diet is essential for keeping your furry friend happy and healthy.

Hay: The Essential Diet for Rabbits

The foundation of a healthy diet for your pet bunny should be hay. Hay should make up the majority of their diet at approximately 75-80% of their total diet. Bunnie’s digestive systems require a steady supply of fiber, which hay is rich in. Your local pet store should have a variety of hay mixes, such as timothy hay, oat hay, and orchard grass, that make excellent options for your pet’s diet. Hay should always be fresh, as bunnies will know when it has become stale and are not likely to eat it. Additionally, hay should always be within reach of your pet bunny — they will naturally learn to nibble at it throughout the day.

Green Leafy Vegetables

Besides hay, green leafy vegetables make a great addition to your pet bunny’s diet. Vegetables, along with hay, should comprise of 10-15% of their overall diet. Be sure to introduce new vegetables gradually, as changes to the diet should be done gradually to avoid digestive distress. Green leafy vegetables such as romain lettuce, parsley, endive, cilantro and Brussels sprouts are safe for your bunny to eat. Escarole and radicchio should be given sparingly, as these greens are more bitter and can contain high levels of oxalic acid.

Small Amounts of Fruits

Fruits should only be given in small amounts occasionally — as a special treat — usually no more than 1-2 tablespoons per 2.5 pounds of your pet bunny’s weight. Fruits are very high in sugar, which can lead to diarrhea, obesity, and other digestive issues. Examples of safe fruits include banana, apples, and watermelon. Avoid giving your pet bunny fruits such as grapes and raisins, as these can be toxic for your pet.

The key to providing a healthy diet for your pet bunny is understanding their dietary needs and providing them with a well-balanced diet of hay and vegetables, with small amounts of fruit from time to time. Doing so will ensure your furry friend remains happy and healthy for a long, long time.
