The Details of the Accident
The accident occurred around 6:45 p.m. local time on a rural stretch of farm-to-market highway. The driver of the pickup truck, Jack Dillon Young, was heading southbound when he made an illegal U-turn onto Uvalde County Road 417 and drove straight into the path of the van. The van, which belonged to the First Baptist Church of New Braunfels, was carrying thirteen seniors of the congregation on their way back from a retreat in Leakey, Texas.

The Aftermath
The accident was so devastating that all of the van’s passengers died on the spot except for one. Two people in the pickup truck, the driver and his unfamiliar passenger, were also injured. The passenger, who survived the crash with critical injuries, was later identified as 20-year-old John Cruz.
