What is a CDL?

A Commercial Driver’s License (or CDL) is essentially a license for driving certain types of large, commercial vehicles like 18-wheelers and other large trucks, buses, and tanker vehicles. Generally, these vehicles are used by professional businesses and organizations to transport goods, materials, and/or people from point A to point B. With this in mind, it makes sense that the drivers who operate these vehicles must consistently comply with not only federal laws, but state laws as well. This is where the CDL comes into play.

How to Obtain a CDL?

In order to obtain a CDL, drivers must meet the vehicle-specific qualifications outlined by their state (this may include tests for skills, services, and physical abilities necessary for operating the particular type of vehicle). Additionally, drivers must also pass a physical examination verifying their good health and soundness of mind. The age to obtain a CDL license (depending on vehicle type) usually ranges from 18-21. Also, it should be noted that in order to obtain a CDL, drivers must have a valid driver’s license that has not been suspended or revoked in the past.

Why Get a CDL?

CDL drivers are in high demand in the transportation industry because they can safely and reliably transport various goods and materials around the country. CDL drivers are also typically well-paid compared to regular drivers since their regular duties require a lot of skill, special training, and vigilance. CDL drivers can hold CDL Class A, B, and/or C licenses, depending on the weight of the vehicle they are driving (Class A is for the heaviest vehicles, such as 18-wheelers, while Class C is for smaller vehicles such as light-duty trucks and passenger vehicles).

By having a CDL, drivers are also in line for higher wages and increased benefits as well. With this in mind, it’s important for CDL drivers to keep their license up-to-date and not let any violations accumulate on their records, as this can lead to lower wages, penalties, and even suspension of the license. Ultimately, obtaining a CDL is a great investment for individuals who are looking to work in the transportation industry, as this license will open up more job opportunities and potentially provide long–term benefits.
