What is a Mullet?

A mullet is a hairstyle that is considered as extreme, and one that began as a fad but many have adopted as a permanent look. Mullets first made an appearance in the late 1970s, and have become more and more popular over time. Considered a “bad” hairstyle, a mullet is characterized by short sides and long in the back.

The Origin of the Mullet

The origin of the mullet isn’t completely clear, but one theory is that the style was first sported by French peasants, who had to cut their hair short in the front in order to display humility, but had to keep it long in the back in order to stay warm and protect their neck from the cold. This look, while historically a choice of fashion, is now considered more of a joke in modern times.

Types of Mullets

Today, the mullet is an ever-evolving hairstyle and there are various types of mullets that range from extreme to more conservative. Examples of mullets range from the classic “business in the front and party in the back” look, to the modernized “flowhawk” mullet. Other types of mullets include the “rocker mullet”, which resembles the classic “fauxhawk” but with more defined lines in the back, as well as the “neo-mullet”, which is a modernized version of the traditional look.

No matter the type, the mullet is a style that is still around today, and one that will likely continue to evolve as fashions do. While still a little bit outrageous, the mullet has made a permanent place in the world of hairstyling and fashion.
