What Is A Pangolin?

Pangolins, also known as scaly anteaters, are an ancient group of mammals that inhabit habitats from African tropical rain forests to Asia’s dry grasslands and deserts. They are the only mammals on the planet that have scales and easily recognizable for their cone-shaped, overlapping armor-like scales. Pangolins are fascinating and unique animals that are in danger of extinction due to human activities.

The four species of pangolins that range in size can be square sometimes up to 19.7 – 39.4 inches (50 – 100 cm) long and 5.9 – 11.8 inches (15 – 30 cm) in shoulder height and up to 44 lb (20 kg). All pangolins have long, slightly hollowed-out tongues that extend up to 9.8 – 12.9 inches (25 – 33 cm) and they use them to scoop up ant eggs and adults. Pangolins are solitary animals and are nocturnal. They are active after dark during insect mating and oviposition seasons.

Adaptations For Survival

Pangolins have adapted to survive in their habitats through their incredible scales. Their scales offer physical protection for pangolins as a defense against predators and are considered to be one of the toughest exoskeletons in the animal kingdom. The scale structure is made up of keratin, which is the same material found in human fingernails. Pangolins also have powerful legs that allow them to move quickly when the need arises. In addition, the snout of a pangolin is long and slender, allowing them to probe deep inside ant hills.

Conservation Status

Unfortunately, due to poaching, habitat destruction, human consumption and the illegal trade of pangolin scales and products, these animals are at risk of extinction. Even though there is legislation in place, nearly all wild pangolins are under threat across their range, with four species facing the highest risk of extinction.
