What is a Stoma?

A stoma is a surgically created opening in the abdomen. It is made either by connecting the end of the small intestine or large intestine to the skin surface, or removing a part of the large intestine and attaching it onto the skin surface by bringing it out through the abdomen wall. The purpose of a stoma is to allow wastes to leave the body. This is most common in people who are unable to pass these wastes through their body in the normal way.

What Are the Different Types of Stoma?

A colostomy is the most commonly performed stoma. This is when part of the large intestine (colon) is brought to the surface of the abdomen. The waste product is the same as it would normally pass through the rectum, however, it will exit the body through a surgically created opening instead.

An ileostomy is where the small intestine is connected to the abdomen surface. The waste product is more liquid than a colostomy and is often referred to as stool.

An urostomy is an opening created that is connected to the urinary system. This is used when the bladder needs to be bypassed, either due to damage or blockage.

What is Life Like with a Stoma?

Having a stoma can bring many changes to a person’s life, both physically and emotionally. Support groups can help with this transition and provide resources and advice on living with a stoma.

A stoma will require regular care and attention. A pouch takes the role of a traditional diaper and will be used to collect waste and absorb any odours. The pouch should be changed regularly and may need to be maintained and emptied during the day, depending on the type of stoma and individual’s lifestyle.

Having a stoma can also increase the risk of skin irritation and infection around the stoma. Good hygiene practices, such as choosing the right pouch, will help to reduce this risk. Regularly seeing a doctor and/or a stoma care nurse is important to ensure that the stoma is healthy.

All in all, having a stoma can take time to adjust to but once you have the right information and the correct support, it is possible to live a healthier, more fulfilling life.
