What is Advent?

Advent is a period of the Christian calendar year where we turn our focus from our regular commitments and schedule to a time of expectant preparation for the celebration of the coming of Jesus at Christmas. It is a special time devoted to remembering the story of Jesus’ arrival as a baby in Bethlehem, but it is also a time for valuing the spiritual dimensions of preparing to celebrate his birth. In particular, Christians observe the season of Advent as a call to spiritual values — values such as hope, peace, joy, and love.

Advent Season:

The season of Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, and includes the four Sundays before Christmas Day (Advent Sunday, the Second Sunday of Advent, and so on until Christmas). In addition, many Christians observe the preceding four weeks as a time of reflection and preparation. This period is sometimes referred to as the ‘Advent Fast.’ Advent ends on Christmas Day (the birth of Jesus).

The Meaning Behind Advent:

Advent is a time to remember the story of Jesus’ coming to earth, to celebrate our belief that God was born in human form, that he suffered and died for our sins, and that he was resurrected and ascended into Heaven. These beliefs are often referred to as the ‘Good News’ of Christmas. During this time, Christians remember and renew their commitment to living out this Good News in their personal lives and in the world around them.

During Advent, Christians often focus on spiritual practices such as prayer, Bible study, and meditating on Jesus’ life and teachings. They may also attend special services, sing Advent carols, and decorate their homes to celebrate this special season. By taking part in these activities, Christians can come to a deeper appreciation and understanding of the power and love of God revealed in Jesus. As they prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, they are challenged to turn away from the distractions and busyness of life and to embrace the spirit of the Advent season.
