The Post-Generation Z Population: Is There Life After Gen Z?

The truth is, no one knows what comes after Generation Z. The term ‘Generation Z’ is often used as a catch-all for people born after 1997 to describe the digital natives who are tech-savvy and accustomed to an ever-evolving digital landscape. So, what comes after them?

The Generational Bubble

The problem lies in the generational bubble phenomenon that can see marketers and brands trying too hard to order and name society’s generations. We are indeed in a period of evolution, but the idea that tech-savviness and the digital age are factors that are limited to the current generation is a bit of a stretch. And yet, since the term “Generation Z” was coined in 1999, every decade has been given a new label—X, Y, Z—marking major changes in the population.

The Passage of Time

The truth of the matter is that labeling a generation isn’t the endpoint—we will still continue to evolve, regardless of what happens in the digital world. We’ll still have a need for goods and services—no need to worry about the implications of a world without generations. The passage of time will bring us something new, something that doesn’t fit neatly into any label, something that defies the arbitrary names given to our period of development.

In the end, it might be good not to know what comes after Generation Z. With any luck, something new—something we haven’t even dreamed of yet—will appear on the horizon. But, until then, all we can do is remain open minded and see what the future has to offer.
