What is an STI?

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that are passed on from one person to another through sexual contact. STIs are also known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). They are a very real, and sometimes severe, threat to a person’s sexual health. Many different types of STIs exist, some of which can be cured while others cannot. Some of the more common STIs are Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV or “Herpes”).

How Are STIs Transmitted?

STIs can be transmitted through various forms of sexual activity. This includes vaginal, anal, and oral sex. In rare cases, STIs can also be transmitted non-sexually, such as through sharing needles for intravenous drug use, use of shared items (such as razors), or from mother to baby during pregnancy or childbirth.

How Can I Protect Myself from STIs?

The best way to protect yourself from STIs is to practice abstinence. If you choose to be sexually active, there are certain steps you can take to reduce your risk of contracting an STI. These include using condoms correctly, limiting the number of sexual partners, getting tested regularly, avoiding high-risk activities such as sharing needles, and knowing the status of your partner(s).

It is important to note that while taking the above steps can reduce your risk of contracting an STI, they are not 100% effective in preventing transmission. The only sure way to reduce the risk is to abstain from all sexual activity.

By taking steps to protect your sexual health and understanding the risks, you can take an active role in preventing the transmission of STIs.
