What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is an eye condition where the shape of the cornea or lens is curved differently in two directions. This can cause distorted or blurred vision either in near or far distances due to an irregular refraction of light. It is quite a common refractive error and is often seen alongside myopia (short-sightedness) or hyperopia (long-sightedness).

How Does Astigmatism Affect Your Vision?

If your eye has an astigmatism, it means that the eye bend the rays of light that enter it in two directions. This causes light to focus in two or more points on the retina instead of one, resulting in distorted images that could appear blurred, stretched or bent. In some cases, astigmatism also reduces contrast sensitivity as well as colour perception. This can lead to a decrease in overall visual quality and acuity.

What Are the Treatment Options for Astigmatism?

The good news is that astigmatism can usually be corrected with the use of spectacles, contact lenses, laser therapy or surgical procedures. The type of treatment will depend on the degree and type of astigmatism you have. In mild cases, ensuring regular eye tests and wearing prescription lenses such as glasses or contact lenses can work. For more severe cases of astigmatism, laser therapy such as LASIK or PRK are options as they can reshape the cornea to improve vision. In some cases, surgery may also be recommended.

It is important to see your eye care specialist if you are experience any vision changes or if your vision is blurred or distorted. They can help diagnose and determine the best treatment option for your specific case of astigmatism.
