What is Bisexual?

Bisexuality is a sexual orientation where an individual is attracted to people of their own gender and other genders. Bisexuality is often confused with pansexuality, but there is a key difference. While people who are pansexual are attracted to people regardless of their gender identity, bisexuals are attracted to people who are either the same gender as them, or a different gender. Bisexuals may also use the terms “pansexual” or “omnisexual” interchangeably.

The Challenges of Bisexuality

Being bisexual often comes with a unique set of challenges and obstacles. People who identify as bisexual may face prejudice and discrimination because of their sexual orientation, and may feel discomfort or even fear when expressing their sexuality. Additionally, bisexuals can feel invisible within the LGBTQ+ community, as there is often a perception that bisexuals have an easier time “passing” for heterosexual, and therefore often don’t face direct or public discrimination. As a result, bisexuals can experience a greater sense of isolation and invisibility, as they are not only subjected to discrimination from heterosexuals, but also members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Visibility and Acceptance of Bisexuality

Despite the stigmas, bisexuality is becoming increasingly visible both in media and in the real world. More and more people are openly embracing the bisexual label, sharing their stories to create a sense of acceptance and understanding. This visibility is playing a crucial role in challenging assumptions and stereotypes and creating a safe, welcoming space for bisexuals to be their true selves.

Additionally, there are a variety of resources to help people on their journey to understanding and accepting themselves as bisexual. Organizations like BiNet USA and The Bisexual Resource Center are dedicated to providing educational and supportive spaces for the bisexual community. By increasing visibility, understanding, and acceptance of bisexuality, this invaluable work can help to create a more inclusive world for bisexuals.
