What is Bupropion?

Bupropion, also known as Zyban and Wellbutrin, is a medication that is commonly used to treat depression, anxiety and seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. It belongs to a class of medications called antidepressants, and it works by increasing the amount of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, which are both neurotransmitters associated with mood regulation. Bupropion is also sometimes prescribed to help people quit smoking, as it has been found to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking cessation.

How Does Bupropion Work?

Bupropion is a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). An NDRI, as the name implies, works by preventing certain neurotransmitters from being reabsorbed back into the neurons after they have been released. When there is an increased amount of neurotransmitters, like serotonin and norepinephrine, in the brain, it can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and even influence behavior.

Common Side Effects of Bupropion

Like many medications, bupropion can cause side effects. Common side effects may include dry mouth, headaches, insomnia, constipation, nausea, anorexia and anxiety. If a person experiences any serious side effects, they should contact their doctor right away. In rare cases, bupropion can cause a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or tongue, and rash or hives.
