What is Coleslaw?
Coleslaw is a delicious side dish or salad made primarily of cabbage, carrots and mayonnaise or a vinaigrette. It is a classic accompaniment to summer cookouts, sandwiches or burgers and can easily be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve it. You can also find prepared coleslaw in grocery and convenience stores.

History of Coleslaw
Coleslaw is thought to have originated in the Netherlands in the late 16th century, and was known as “koolsla”, meaning “cabbage salad”. It is believed that Dutch sailors eventually brought the dish to America, where it quickly grew in popularity. By the 19th century, the dish had evolved to include mayonnaise and became widely known as “coleslaw”.

Making and Serving Coleslaw
Making your own coleslaw is easy and requires just a few ingredients. The dressing is typically a mix of mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar and seasonings. You can also substitute plain yogurt for mayonnaise to lighten it up. For a creamier dressing, try adding some sour cream. As for the vegetables, cabbage and carrots are the most traditional, but you can also add shredded red onion or bell pepper.

Once you’ve made your coleslaw, you can either serve it right away or store it in the refrigerator. The optimal time frame is usually between 1-3 days, but if you’re sure that you’ve used fresh ingredients, it can last a few days longer. Coleslaw is especially delicious when served with burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches or as a side with grilled fish or chicken. Try experimenting by adding different herbs or fruits to the mix; you’re sure to find a flavor combination that you love.
