What is Constipation?

Constipation is a condition where someone is unable to have a regular and complete bowel movement. It is characterized by infrequent and or difficult to pass stool, and can lead to symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, bloating and a feeling of fullness. This can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as diet, medications, disease and lifestyle choices. Constipation is a very common and treatable condition, but it’s important to understand the causes and effects of this condition.

What Causes Constipation?

There are several reasons why someone can be experiencing constipation. One common cause are certain medications, such as antibiotics and pain relievers. Other conditions and medications that can be associated with constipation include iron supplements, antacids, antispasmodics and tricyclic antidepressants. Constipation can also be a side effect of some diseases, such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and multiple sclerosis, or of autoimmune conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases, lifestyle choices can be contributing to constipation. Low fiber diets, lack of physical activity, ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement and stress can all lead to constipation.

How to Manage Constipation?

Constipation can usually be managed through dietary and lifestyle modifications. Increasing the amount of fiber in the diet is one of the most effective methods for treating and preventing constipation. Eating a healthy diet that includes high-fiber foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables can help improve regularity. Incorporating more physical activities, such as walking and light exercise, can help stimulate efficient digestion and reduce constipation. Stress can also wreak havoc on digestion and so it is important to seek out ways to de-stress like through breathing exercises or massage. Additionally, it is important to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and go to the bathroom when the urge arises.

If these methods do not work, there are other ways to treat constipation. Many over the counter medications exist that assist with keeping the bowels regular like laxative tablets or powders, or osmotic laxatives such as milk of magnesia or ex-lax. It is important to consult your doctor if you are experiencing chronic constipation and if you are finding it difficult to manage on your own.
