What is Ranch Water?
Ranch water is a popular tequila-based drink commonly enjoyed in the west and specifically in the city of El Paso, Texas. Named after the nearby ranches that offer a uniquely Southwest flavor, ranch water combines the smoothness of tequila with a splash of lime and soda water. The result is a crisp and refreshing beverage perfect for enjoying on hot summer days.

History of Ranch Water
Invented in the early 2000s by an El Paso bartender, ranch water quickly gained popularity in the Southwest and is now a staple of El Paso’s bar scene. The drink itself is based on a classic Western cocktail called the Paloma, made of tequila, lime and grapefruit soda. The ranch water variation, however, uses soda water instead of grapefruit soda, making it lighter, crisper and less bitter.

Making and Enjoying Ranch Water
To make a ranch water, first fill your glass full of ice and add one to two ounces of tequila. Then add a good squeeze of fresh lime or two wedges, and add soda water until full. For an extra twist, add a splash of Topo Chico mineral water or a splash of grapefruit juice and fresh mint. Stir and enjoy your ranch water with a wedge of lime.

For a crowd, ranch water can also be served in a large pitcher. Just combine one liter of tequila, 32 ounces of soda water and a few limes cut into wedges. Have it with chips and guacamole and you’ve got the perfect refreshing beverage for a hot summer day.

Ranch water is beloved in the West and especially in El Paso, where locals have embraced the drink and made it their own. Whether you’re enjoying a cool glass of ranch water on your own or sharing it with friends, it’s sure to be a hit.
