What is Thrush Mouth?

Thrush mouth is an infection caused by a group of fungi called Candida albicans. The fungi is usually present on the body, but an excess of it can cause an infection. It is an uncomfortable and often painful condition which affects the upper parts of the body, including the mouth and throat. Thrush is a common issue, as around three quarters of all people will experience it at some point in their lives.

Signs & Symptoms

Thrush mouth is a common infection, particularly amongst infants and young children, although adults are also at risk. Symptoms of thrush include changes to the lining of the mouth, such as whitish areas or lesions. These can form into patches which can be rubbed off very easily. Thrush can cause a burning sensation to the mouth which is particularly uncomfortable. The tongue can look red or glazed and some people may experience difficulty eating, drinking or even speaking.

Treatment & Prevention

Fortunately, thrush mouth is relatively straightforward to treat. Speak with your doctor about the best course of action for you, which may include antifungal medicines such as nystatin and fluconazole. To prevent recurrence, it is important to take any medication as prescribed and to maintain good hygiene. Practicing good oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing regularly and cutting down on sugary foods, will also help.

Thrush mouth, although uncomfortable, is a relatively common infection with relatively easy treatments. If you experience any symptoms of thrush, please speak to your health care provider for advice.
