What Is USFL?

The United States Football League (USFL) was an American professional football league that lasted for three seasons, from 1983 to 1985. The league attempted to compete with the National Football League (NFL), but ultimately failed due to financial problems. Despite its failure, the USFL had an enormous impact on the world of professional football.

The History of the USFL

The USFL was founded in 1982 by a group of owners who wanted to provide an alternative to the NFL. The league had 18 teams and its inaugural season was held in 1983. The teams played a six-week regular season followed by playoffs and a championship game. The first two USFL champions were the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars and the Michigan Panthers.

The USFL’s most notable players during its existence were QBs Steve Young and Doug Flutie, RBs Herschel Walker and Gary Anderson, WR Anthony Carter, and DB Brian Kelley. These players, along with others, helped make the USFL a successful endeavor.

The Decline and End of the USFL

During its second season, the USFL made an ill-fated decision to switch from a spring/summer season to a fall/winter season to directly compete with the NFL. This decision caused a number of problems for the league, from financial difficulties to a failed lawsuit against the NFL. The USFL officially folded in 1986, after its three-year run.
