Dory: The Iconic Blue Tang Fish

With the release of the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 hit movie, Finding Nemo, many people will be seeing the beloved “Dory” for the first time. Dory is a Blue Tang fish, with a bright blue color and an iconic black stripe along her back. But what does that mean, exactly? Let’s take a little dive into the world of Blue Tangs and get to know what makes Dory so special.

Physical Characteristics of Blue Tangs

The scientific name for the Blue Tang is Paracanthurus hepatus, and they are known as surgeonfish in many parts of the world. In the wild, they are typically found in tropical ocean locations like the Caribbean and tropical Indo-Pacific. Adult Blue Tangs most commonly measure between 6 and 8 inches in length, and they feature a variety of colors and patterns. Along with the bright blue body, they typically feature a bright yellow pattern, resembling a butterfly, along the middle of their back and the bright yellow tailfin. Additional colors come in, like the thin black stripe that runs from the nose, just like Dory! The colors on a Blue Tang will grow brighter as they grow older, and they have small spines called “scalpels” near their tails which serve as a defense mechanism.

Diet and Habits of Blue Tangs

Blue Tangs are herbivores, preferring to feed on small plants, seaweeds, and algae. They can be found in small schools, swimming along tropical reefs, coral, sea grass beds, and lagoons. Blue Tangs are typically active during the day and they reproduce during the dry season.

Where to Find Blue Tangs

Given their warm water needs and intense colors, Aquarists may find that it’s hard to find a Blue Tang in their area. However, they can be found in tropical fish stores and online for delivery. Some Great Lakes Aquariums also have Blue Tahs. Caring for a Blue Tang can be fairly straightforward, but it does require a large aquarium with a good filtration system and lots of swimming space.

Dory is a beloved character, and now you can appreciate her even more. Blue Tangs are beautiful, vibrant creatures that are perfect for saltwater aquariums, and every one of them is unique. If you’re considering a Blue Tang for your home aquarium, do plenty of research before bringing one home and make sure you have the right space and salts. Happy swimming!
