What Viruses are Going Around?

The world has seen a rise in various viruses over the last few years. From the Coronavirus to Influenza, it can be difficult to know what viruses are currently circulating and what the best methods are to prevent and protect yourself against them.

Influenza

Influenza is an airborne viral infection that is typically contagious then transmitted through inhaling airborne droplets of saliva or mucus coughed or sneezed out by an infected person. It can cause a range of breathing problems and is particularly dangerous for those who are in vulnerable groups, such as those with existing conditions or people over the age of 65. Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include fever, coughing, sore throat and aching muscles. A vaccine is available for the influenza virus, and it is strongly recommended for those in vulnerable groups. Even for those who are not usually vaccinated, it is advised to receive the vaccine to reduce the risk of developing severe symptoms and passing the virus on to others.

Coronavirus

Coronavirus is a family of viruses that can cause mild to severe respiratory illness. In December 2019, the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic after a novel strain of the virus, known as SARS-CoV-2, was discovered in China. SARS-CoV-2 is more contagious than other strains of the virus and has since spread to nearly every corner of the globe. Symptoms of the virus can range from mild to severe respiratory issues, including fever, sore throat, dry cough and difficulty breathing. Additionally, it can also cause gastrointestinal issues, such as diarrhoea and vomiting. The best protection against the virus is good handwashing and maintaining a distance of six feet or more from individuals outside of your household.

Enterovirus

Enterovirus is a virus that typically causes mild to moderate respiratory illness. Symptoms can range from a mild fever and runny nose to symptoms similar to those of the common cold. Enteroviruses can also cause respiratory illness, although in severe cases, it can cause neurological issues such as aseptic meningitis. There is currently no vaccine or antiviral treatment for the virus, so the best methods of prevention are good hygiene and general sanitation practices, as well as avoiding contact with individuals who may be infected.

No matter what virus is currently circulating, it is important to remain vigilant and practice preventive methods such as good hygiene and social distancing. By taking these simple steps, we can all work together to help protect ourselves and those around us, and keep the spread of the virus to a minimum.
