The History of the First US State
In the United States, the first state to officially adopt and be recognized as a state is Delaware. In December of 1787, Delaware was the very first state to ratify the Constitution and gain full statehood. It is located in mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. and is the second smallest state by area. It is bordered by Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey.
The Founding of Delaware
The state of Delaware was originally inhabited by Native Americans from the Lenni Lenape, also known as the Delaware Tribe. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle within the territory, in what is now Lewes. The first permanent settlement was known as Zwaanendael, which translates to “swan valley” in Dutch. This settlement only lasted for about a year, before it was destroyed by local Native American Indians.
The region then came under the control of Sweden, and the area was officially named New Sweden. The Swedish settlement was established in 1638, with the building of Fort Christina, near what is now Wilmington, Delaware. The colony remained under Swedish control until 1682, when it was placed in the control of William Penn and his heirs.
Delaware’s Role in the American Revolution
Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution. This ratification occurred on December 7th, 1787. This made the state of Delaware the very first state to join the original 13 states that comprise the US. In addition to this, Delaware was also the only state that was able to make a unanimous decision about becoming a state.
During the Revolutionary War, Delaware was very active in aiding the Continental Army. Delaware’s militia known as the “Delaware Blues”, were deployed in battles throughout the war, most notably at Brandywine, Germantown and the battle of Iron Hill.
The State of Delaware Today
Today, Delaware is one of the most well-known and populated states in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is home to some of the most important industries in the US, such as agriculture, chemicals, financial services, and pharmaceuticals. The highest population center is located in Wilmington and the state has a population of 973,764, according to the 2020 census.
Delaware is a state that is known for its agricultural and industrial success, as well as its strong roles in the American Revolution and the US Constitution. This history, combined with its modern success, make it one of the most important and well-known states in the US.
