What We Do In The Shadows Season 3: A Look into the Relentless Power of the Vampire Council

What We Do In The Shadows is the critically acclaimed TV show based on the 2014 mockumentary of the same name. This hilarious show follows the lives of four vampires as they navigate life in Staten Island—a world full of other supernatural creatures, gothic fashion, and eternal night. Season three of the series just wrapped up and fans got to see the vampires not only battle with each other but with the Vampire Council, a group of previously unknown vampires who showed up to enforce centuries of vampire law. Here’s a closer look into what happened during season three and why the Vampire Council proved to be so powerful.

The Vampire Council Arrives

The season three opener finds the four vampires—Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja and Colin Robinson—waiting to face the Vampire Council. The Council is a group of vampires who were summoned to decide how the Staten Island vampires have been living their lives. They’re led by Baron Afanas (Doug Jones) who is an eerily charming and powerful figure. The Council is the first time we get to see the true power and influence of the vampire world and anticipate that their presence will cause some serious waves.

Their Power is Felt

As scenes continue, the Council quickly proves just how powerful their presence is. They are able to change the very way the vampires operate and are determined to re-enact the Vampire’s traditional “laws” to their latest followers. They successfully hotwire a news station in order to spread their message, and they are able to quickly take control of Staten Island. The vampires feel the full force of their presence and take every step possible to stay in the Council’s good graces.

The Siege of Staten Island

The Council’s power is laid bare when they demand the vampires of Staten Island show fealty and provide sacrifices for the “Sovereign.” After the vampires refuse, the Council reinstates the traditional vampire siege of Staten Island—a ritual where the vampires of the borough are surrounded and slowly deprived of the human blood they need to survive. The end of the siege is only made possible with the help of Guillermo, Nandor’s familiar, and the sacrifice of two of the Council’s own members.

The Defeat of the Vampire Council

Though these vampires prove to be powerful adversaries, they’re ultimately defeated by a combination of human resourcefulness and the power of the ring that Nandor had purchased at the beginning of the season. After a long and stressful battle, Laszlo manages to break the seal on the ring and use it to imprison the Council in a dark void.

What We Do In The Shadows’ season three finale provided a thrilling end to the ten episodes full of gothic fashion and supernatural hijinks. The introduction of the Vampire Council was a clever and exciting addition to the season. With their strict code of laws and powerful presence, the Vampire Council shone brightly throughout the season and kept fans glued to their screens as the vampires of Staten Island battled for control of their borough.
